Les Mills, the popular fitness club, is kicking and punching its way into the metaverse with a new virtual reality game called BODYCOMBAT VR. In addition to being an expansion of an existing exercise series that incorporates shadowboxing and martial arts, the $29.99 game is also available on the Meta Quest platform.
The game was created by the virtual reality studio Odder Labs, which was led by Rachael Newsham and Dan Cohen, who are both directors of Les Mills BODYCOMBAT. According to a press statement from Les Mills, the game combines basic boxing skills such as jabs, hooks, and uppercuts, as well as squats and slips to avoid hitting the walls and other obstacles. Other actions include snatching targets and slamming them into the knee of the user.
Levels are set against “intergalactic deserts and neo-city skylines” and to handpicked playlists, with the latter being the default. Players receive points for both their technique and their overall effort. There are 25 training sessions with varying degrees of difficulty, and Newsham and Cohen are on hand to provide coaching recommendations throughout.
