The basketball Bundesliga team NINERS Chemnitz and the start-up authentic.network published real memorabilia as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) for the prestigious home game against Alba Berlin in early June. The memorabilia come from the TOP 4 cup final in 2022, which the NINERS were the first East German club to reach. This moment will now be digitally immortalized forever as NFT.
The reason for the worldwide attention: So far, NFTs – unique and forgery-proof collector’s items – have been limited to purely digital products such as audio, image or video files. The NINERS, on the other hand, create the connection between real sports exhibits and trend-setting Web3 applications for the first time in worldwide professional sports. On the NFT marketplace OpenSea, the Bundesliga club offers, among other things, the signed cup match ball, cup jerseys and team posters from the top 4 final 2022 with the corresponding NFT. This world first was made possible by the use of a patented cryptographic code and a special NFT sticker developed by the Chemnitz blockchain start-up authentic.network. The so-called “gummy.link” is currently also attracting great interest from US professional clubs, as the system offers completely new opportunities to inspire fans with digital and real added value. Because in the future, co-ownership of club-historically valuable souvenirs should not only enable NFT owners to increase their value and digital access in Metaverses, but also allow advantages in the real world. This can be VIP tickets, discounts or face-to-face meetings with players and coaches. Comment from Felix Linke, Head Of Marketing, NINERS Chemnitz: “NFTs are the merchandise of the future. They are the ultimate tool for sports fans to express their identification with a team in tomorrow’s digital world. So far, however, the offers have been limited to highly speculative markets such as blue chips or games. With our approach, we want to focus on direct fan relations through credibility and emotionality.” Full story here
