A band of two Spooky monkey will lead the Maltese music industry through unknown territory by performing a concert by the metaverse itself.
Veteran musicians Alex Spiteri Gingell and Michael Quinton will take music lovers to a literal experience abroad on June 10, where together they will be playing a 30-minute setlist from a virtual realm. Lovin Malta sat down with Alex, who was quite hyped about the prospect of mixing in the metaverse. “We’re going to be performing five brand new tracks,” he said, “with a background of different words projected from a green screen.” “There will be five different worlds, changing according to the song.” For the first time in Malta, the initiative became a reality following a proposal to the Malta Council for the Arts to study how the technology could be used to help those in the performing arts amid the itch left by COVID. -19. At the event, viewers will be given access to the performance via a YouTube Live link. They can watch the show live from metaverse, but also via their mobile phones in the absence of VR headsets. It will not be the first time for the enterprising duo, as they tested 20 university students on 19 May. Part of the project, as a pilot undertaking, is data collection. On that day, the band will be giving questionnaires to viewers to talk about their experiences. All part of a re-operation to help aspiring artists pursue the same in the near future. The whole initiative raises the question, is performance in metaverse better than one made live? The answer may not be so simple. True, you won’t be able to surf the crowd or have a beer with your friends while your favorite band lights up on stage, but again, you won’t be able to watch your band play from a volcano either.
